Internet

This resource is available electronically. For access, go back one screen and click on the link underneath the message "Link to online version below" (listed below the title of the journal/book).

Many of the Internet resources are restricted to UCSD IP addresses. UCSD faculty, staff and students may access these resources from off-campus using UCSD proxy server.

If you see this (or a variation)
it means:
Access:

You can be on any UC campus or off campus using the proxy server. The link will take you to the web page for that resource.

Content:

Selected articles

Not all articles are included. Not all articles are full text.

Clicking on this link takes you to the journal's web page.

Selected article text <Name of Database.>

for example: Selected article text for 1984-2000. Computer Database

Not all articles are included. Not all articles are full text.

This link will take you to the named database with a search result of all the records for that journal.

Look for options such as "modify," "narrow" or "back to search."

Search this publication via <database>

for example: Search this publication via LexisNexis Academic.

The link will take you to a database where you can search for articles.
Date/volumes:

Date range

for example: 1984-2000

The online articles will be only for issues of the journals published during those years.

Note: that is the date for the online resource. If you are looking for something outside that date range, write down the call number for the print copy.

Open date

for example: 1983-

If the date is "open" (1983-) it means that the resource started in 1983 and continues to the present.

Again, that is the date for the online resource.

v.<number>, <date-> <Name of Database>

for example: v.20(1967-) JSTOR

If you already have the citation to an article, you can browse the journal and choose the issue your article is in.

If you don't have a citation, you need to search the database for your topic.

Some titles will have more than one link. Choose the link you thing will get you the best results.

For example, the New York Times has 4 links:

1998- ProQuest. Restricted to UC campuses
1851-1999. ProQuest. Restricted to UC campuses

June 1980- Search this publication via LexisNexis Academic. Restricted to UCSD IP addresses
Selected articles from current and back issues. New York Times website (free registration required)

If you are looking for an article from today's paper, the NY Times website would be a good choice. If you are looking for older articles, you will find them on the LexisNexis or ProQuest site. If you are looking for pre-1980 articles, you will have to go to the ProQuest site.

You will find many variations on the above examples. When in doubt, click on the link and see what happens.
