Instructions for creating an rss feed for a new items list
1. The feeds are created in the same Millennium module you use for creating new items lists. You do not have to run a search to do this, though it helps if you know how searches are done. See search instructions (pdf)
2. Feedbuilder does not have all the capabilities of the create list searches. You might be able to use the same search as you do for the new items list. Please see the following guidelines in case you have to make adjustments.
The easiest search is by fund code:
- order record/fund/begins with/film
- order record/fund/equal to/07g65
don't use "has" - only use "begins with" or "equal to"
Call number searches (from the item record):
- item record/call number/begins with/e99
- item record/call number/between/tr 1/tr 835
To specify a call number range, the system assumes three letters, followed by 4 numbers. If you don't have all those letters or numbers, you need to have spaces where those characters go.
In the above example, there are 4 spaces between "tr" and the number "1." The letters are "tr<space>," the numbers are "<space><space><space>1." There are 2 spaces between "tr" and "835" ("tr<space>" + "<space>835")
If you are searching call number from the 050 or 090, ignore these instructions
Subject/format searches:
- bibliographic record/subject/equals/electronic music
- bibliographic record/mat type/equals/u
Date search
- bibliographic record/cat date/greater than/09/01/2008
notes:
- do not use "equal to or greater than" in the date - only use "greater than"
- the feedbuilder only works on cataloging date, not on received date. The date is needed only for the first time the list is run.
3. Save the search
You do not need to run the search unless you want to see if what you entered works. Before you run the search (or instead)
- click on the save button
- in the "Save Query As" box, type a name. The name should start with "rss" and be descriptive of what the search is about. The file name should be in all lowercase. ex.: rssphoto, rsschem
4. If you do run the search, please empty it as soon as the search is run. Because we are not saving the lists (only saving the searches), you are not limited to the number of feeds you want the way you are limited to the number of create lists. You can have as many as you need for specific areas
5. You will need to supply all of the following information in an email to sjurist@ucsd.edu. If you don't send all the information, I'll send the email back to you!
| name of the saved search | it should be "rsssomething" ex. rsschem |
| name of file |
the url for the rss files are The name you supply should be descriptive |
display title of the file
|
ex. "New Chemistry Books" only use alpha-numeric characters. Don't use dates - we do not change the name each time a search is run. Don't use special characters including "&" |
besides title, other bibliographic information to display
|
System limitation: only one other field can be chosen. Choices include:
|
| language other than english? | specify |
| how often should the feed run? | choose one:
|
6. A configuration file based on the information you email me will be set up as soon as possible. I will let you know when it is done - the list should be available sometime the following day (not necessarily first thing in the morning).
